Carpal tunnel is quite a common condition that an impressive number of people deal with. Considering the unpleasant symptoms of this syndrome, such as pain, tingling or numbness in your hand, looking for a solution is certainly recommended. Well, through medicine development, specialists have come up with a surgery that is said to fix the unpleasant symptoms revolving around this condition. Carpet tunnel release surgery has provided amazing results for the majority of patients, so if you want to learn more about this effective solution, the information stated bellow might come in handy:

Benefits

The main benefits of undergoing a carpal tunnel surgery is diminishing or even overcoming entirely the pain and discomfort caused by this syndrome. Pain relief is certainly a strong enough reason to consider this option.  Carpal tunnel is known for the negative effects it has on those suffering from this condition, so surgery is the online long lasting and effective solution

  • Decreasing or combating pain
  • Wrist strength restoration
  • Improving quality of life
  • Overcoming numbness and tingling sensation in the hand
  • Restoring life balance and improving work capabilities

These are the main reasons why the majority of patients choose this option when dealing with acute carpal tunnel symptoms.

Ideal candidate

Knowing whether or not you are suitable to undergo this type of surgical procedure is an important step of the entire process. While there are people who require surgery due to the severity of the condition, mild symptoms can be combated with non-invasive treatment alternatives. So when you should you consider surgery as a viable option?

  • Symptoms have been a been affecting you for more than six months
  • You have tried other forms of treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or a splint without results, or only temporary ones

Your health condition allows you to undergo an invasive procedure

Consultation expectations

During your initial consultation, the doctor will examine you and establish if you are actually in need of a surgery, a minimally invasive one or treatment alternatives less complex. Your doctor is the one who can ultimately tell you if a release surgery is needed or not, so analysing your case is what usually happen during your first consultation Discussing with your surgeon about all surgery implications will be necessary, in order for you to understand the potential risks involved, so make sure you have in mind a few relevant questions, in order to comprehend the subject properly before going into surgery.

Carpal tunnel surgery – standard procedure

Preparing for the surgery and understanding how it will develop is also extremely important. Carpal tunnel release surgery is usually a day-case procedure. This is a positive aspect for most patients, because it means you have the possibility to undergo surgery and return home on the same day. However, you should inform your insurer about this surgical intervention, to make sure the costs involved are covered. Your surgeon will provide you with a consent paper, which you will have to sign, stating that you have understood and agreed with surgery implications. You will be taken into an operating room, where a nurse will ensure you are seated in a comfortable position and place a torque around the top of your arm. In order to avoid any discomfort during the surgical intervention, you will receive local anaesthetic injections. The toque will be inflated, functioning like a blood pressure cuff and having the role to stop blood flowing into your hand. The procedure last somewhere around 20 minutes. The surgeon will make a cut of 3 or 4 cm long, somewhere near the base of your hand. The carpal ligament will be divided in a way that relieves pressure on your median nerve. The incision will be then closed with the help of stitches. As you can see, the entire procedure does not take long, and there are no major complications to worry about.

Recovery facts

Just like any other surgical intervention, carpal tunnel release surgery implies knowing a few recovery facts, in order to avoid any potential inconveniences. The cut on your hand might cause you a slight discomfort for a few postoperative days. In order to overcome any unpleasant sensations, it is recommended to move your fingers and start using the hand for light tasks, such as holding a glass, and over the next days move on to activities that require a bit more hand effort, such as brushing your teeth. However, you should avoid gripping your hand too hard, because this might cause some pain. Your grip will return to normal somewhere around six to twelve weeks. Your stitches will be removed after 10-14 days. Because the surgery involves some scarring, it is recommended to massage the area with moisturizer, in order maintain the scar appearance to minimal. You will be able to notice an improvement after a couple of months. You can discuss with your surgeon regarding the pain relief medication you will be able to take.

Potential side effects

Being a form of treatment that requires a more invasive approach, and that includes going under anaesthetic, there are a few potential side effects you should know about;

  • Discomfort or pain along the cut on your hand
  • Scarring
  • Weaker grip
  • Temporary swelling

All of these side effects can occur, but do not involve a higher level of pain such as the one your carpal tunnel syndrome is causing you at the moment.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any guarantees?

Although there i always a chance of a surgery not to provide the expected results, considering the high percent of satisfied patients, you can feel safe opting for this intervention

What do I do if my CTS returns?

This is less likely to happen, but if it does, your surgeon will be able to provide you with clear indication on further solutions.

What kind of anaesthesia will be used?

Local anaesthesia is the primary type used, so you will not have to worry in this department

Can I leave the clinic after having the procedure?

The C-Section scar revision will not last more than 1 hour, and the doctor will perform it under local anaesthesia, so you will be able to leave the clinic after having the procedure. It is advisable to avoid practicing exercises and to support the scar with tape for the following weeks, for getting the best results. From my first phone call enquiry to Gregory to having my breast augmentation done, everything has been brilliant. Gregory was very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable, as well as organised in the first call. My consultation at the Watford branch with Mr Tillo was great, very approachable, and he took the time to listen to what I wanted. On the procedure day I went in at 8.30am and was home by midday. Even the anaesthetist was kind, jolly and put me at ease. Nearly six weeks on and everything looks great - as I wanted and I have had no pain at all. Would highly recommend.read more

All I can say is absolutely brilliant! This is the first time I've ever had cosmetic surgery so you can imagine how nervous I was. Even though it was a small procedure (umbilicoplasty with scar removal) Mr Tillo and the team made me feel extremely relaxed and calm to the point where I actually enjoyed my procedure! The aftercare is also amazing. Any queries I may have I contact the team and I almost instantly get a reply. I highly recommend the surgery!read more

Have thought about labiaplasty surgery since having the twins, I finally took the plunge and booked in to see a consultant plastic surgeon. I didn't realise that the surgery was performed as an outpatient, so meant I could go home the same day! I was surprised by how little pain there was afterwards. They gave me a 7 day course of antibiotics to take as a precaution, but I don't think I needed them. Very pleased with the result and glad that Mr Sinha was my surgeon.read more

The ongoing middle age spread battle meant I cheated, and had liposuction at CoS. The doctor (Perrone) was a great listener and understood my reservations. We figured out my actual needs, he listened to my preferences and the lipo was a real success. Big thumbs up to Dr P and especially Nikesh for his regular phonecalls to check how I was doing. Really appreciate the post op care, thanks.read more

At first I was very worried about going ahead with my surgery as any surgery has its risks and I had never gone outside of the NHS. However, after receiving a phone call from them I was instantly at ease as Gregory; the gentleman I spoke with, had previously undergone the same surgery. At first I wasn’t very open to talking about it as I found it very embarrassing, so to hear that someone was once in my shoes gave me the confidence to talk about it. Prior to the operation the Surgeon and I went over all of the details of my operation several times and I was very happy that they knew exactly what they were doing. I am extremely happy with the result of my Gynaecomastia treatment and so far I have minimal scarring. I’d like to thank the team for their aftercare service as I have had communication from their team every other day to ensure that my recovery was as smooth as possible and that I had everything I needed. Overall, a very professional and supportive team with expert surgeons. Highly recommend.read more

I had a consultation with Dr Alam for hair transplant surgery and found him to be open and honest about all aspects of the procedure. I had FUE with 1500 grafts and although it is quite early, the results are just as I hoped for. The procedure was done under local anaesthetic and was virtually pain-free. I am surprised about the lack of swelling and I would highly recommend Dr Alam for hair restoration surgery.read more
