Why do I have acne prone skin?
You may notice your skin is prone to acne. Why? Often it is because the skin produces too much of an oily substance known as sebum. When we produce too much sebum in the sebaceous glands, the follicles and pores on the skin will get clogged. This will mean they are full of dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria, causing them to become inflamed. This creates acne on the skin.
How to treat acne prone skin
Acne can often have a negative impact on your self-esteem and confidence. After all, it often appears on a prominent area of your body – your face – and makeup can sometimes not be completely effective at concealing it. Fortunately, there are numerous non-surgical procedures which can be an appropriate remedy. These include:
- Microneedling: this involves using small needles to stimulate the skin. This causes the skin to develop new collagen. With time, the new collagen moves to the surface of the skin, making it appear more youthful, vibrant and healthy. You will notice these results gradually and can take up to six weeks to notice the effects of the derma rollers, however, skin improvements will continue for the following 12 months. Most people opt to have three procedures, however, you can choose to have several or just the one.
- Chemical skin peels: this involves brushing liquids onto your face to remove dead skin cells and encourage collagen growth. This will be applied for a few minutes, where you will feel a mild warm sensation. This will then be cleaned and neutralised. After two or three days, your skin will feel tighter and start to shed. After five to seven days you will begin to be able to see the results of the chemical skin peel. To maintain optimal results, it is recommended that this procedure is repeated monthly.
- Microdermabrasion: using a process of minute sterilised crystals, microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin. This reveals newer, younger-looking skin, which is more receptive to nutrients which are applied post-treatment.
