Mr Omar Tillo
Consultant Plastic Surgeon
There are numerous reasons why adult men choose to undertake circumcisions. This includes:
You may wish to seek out other non-surgical options, such as steroids, before choosing to undergo surgery.
You will be a suitable candidate for this procedure if you are wishing to circumcise the penis.
You may be encouraged to undergo non-surgical options prior to undergoing circumcision.
You will need to be a non-smoker, or be able to stop smoking prior to the surgery. Smoking can have a negative impact on the wound healing and can slow down the recovery period.
You will have to be at least 18 years old to undergo this procedure at Centre for Surgery.
Circumcision is performed as a day case, so you will be able to return home once the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off.
Circumcision can be performed under either local or a general anaesthetic. At Centre for Surgery, our general anaesthetic is known as ClearSleep™.
This is a relatively simple procedure to perform. The surgeon will use a scalpel or surgical scissors to remove the foreskin.
Dissolvable stitches will then be used to stitch the remaining edge of the skin.
Following the procedure, it is normal to experience some pain, swelling and discomfort. You will be able to take pain medication to help any symptoms. These symptoms may last around three to four days.
It will take around 10 days for the wound to heal.
You may need to take around one week off work to fully recover. However, this will vary from person to person, and you may be able to return to work sooner or require more time off.
You should avoid any sexual activity for at least four weeks.
A circumcision will either be performed under a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic.
The procedure involves removing the foreskin with scissors or a scalpel. The remaining edge of the skin will then be stitched.
You will be given either a local or general anaesthetic prior to the procedure starting, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure.
You may experience some discomfort for the first few days following the procedure. You will be able to take pain medication to help alleviate any symptoms.
This will vary from person to person and will depend on what type of employment you have. If you have a manual job that is physically demanding, you may need to take a week or more off work to fully recover. Others may feel they will be able to return to work earlier.
You should avoid sexual activities for four weeks following the procedure.
It is normal to experience swelling following circumcision. However, the chance of any other risks occurring is rare.
