Sculptra is a cosmetic filler which contains the biocompatible synthetic acid called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). This stimulates the production of collagen, which improves the appearance of the skin.
It is suitable for those who have wrinkles and fine lines in the face which they are wanting to remove, and for those who are looking to add volume to the face. In most cases, you will require numerous treatments over multiple months to achieve the desired results.
You will be considered eligible for Sculptra if you have:
Suitable candidates are often those who have lost volume in their face due to weight loss, or due to an illness such as HIV.
This is generally not suitable for those who are looking to improve the appearance of their eyes or lips.
Prior to having the injections, you will need to attend a consultation with your surgeon. They will be able to assess your skin and tell you whether or not you are a suitable candidate for Sculptra injections, or whether another non-surgical or surgical treatment is more suitable.
Sculptra is a non-surgical procedure, so you will be able to return home and back to your usual daily schedule straight after the injections.
On the day of the injections, your skin will be cleaned, before the surgeon will map out exactly where the injections will take place. A topical anaesthetic will also be applied to your skin to help numb the area. Thin needles will then be used and the Sculptra solution will be injected. Multiple injections will be required.
You may need multiple treatment sessions. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on how many you need and how frequent the treatment sessions will be. Generally, the treatment sessions are spread out across several months.
It may take up to two weeks to see results.
Results should last for up to two years.
After the injections, you may notice some redness, itching or bruising. This should reduce within the first few days. You may wish to apply a cold pack to the area to help with any discomfort and help to reduce swelling.
For the first five days following the injections, you will have to massage the injection area for five minutes at a time, five times a day.
Make sure you avoid any excess sun exposure until any redness in your face has reduced.
