Mr Mital Desai is a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical interests include lower extremity arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease and TIAs/stroke, diabetic foot management, venous disease (including varicose veins and post-thrombotic limb), and cardiovascular risk management.
He was successful in being appointed on a highly competitive clinical academic training programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research, first as an academic clinical fellow followed by an academic clinical lecturer in Leicester and London respectively. During his higher surgical training by Health Education England, he gained integrated experience in open and endovascular complex aortic aneurysm repair, lower extremity arterial disease, carotid disease, endovenous interventions, arteriovenous malformations, and paediatric vascular surgery at Royal Free Hospital and University College Hospital, London. Following completion of training, he has done a post-CCT fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital, London gaining advanced endovascular training in aortic, lower extremity arterial and deep venous disease.
He has designed and developed new aortic stent-grafts using a biomaterial with improved compliance and durability and studied them in a physiological model for duration equivalent to 10 years in the human body. He has also done clinical research on sex-related outcomes following aortic aneurysm repair (endovascular and open) in England over a 13-year period. He has several high impact factor peer-reviewed publications. He has given more than 60 oral international presentations with talks in several prize sessions including the prestigious British Journal of Surgery prize twice, Moynihan prize and Patey prize. In addition, he has won several awards including the Circulation Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship, ESVS best presentation prize and travel grant, and the Fellows in Training Award by American Heart Association, amongst others. Following on from his Cochrane review, his current research interest includes a proposal for a multicentre randomised controlled trial on remote ischaemic preconditioning in aortic aneurysm surgery. He is also interested in drug-eluting technology for angioplasty balloons including research on novel therapies such as Sirolimus-coated balloons for below the knee arterial disease.
He is an active member of the European Society for Vascular Surgery and an affiliate member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is a reviewer for several vascular journals including the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He has an active interest in teaching and is a trained educational and clinical supervisor for vascular speciality trainees and core trainees. He has also developed a teaching programme for medical students at UCL.
He was appointed as a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2019 and has clinical sessions across St George’s Hospital, Tooting and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.
