Do you think the skin around your chin is too droopy? Do you want to remove your double chin? This feature can often cause low self-confidence and self-esteem issues. If this is the case, you may wish to consider chin liposuction.
It’s not just obese people who can have a double chin—it can affect people of any weight. Sometimes, it is a result of ageing and the laxity of the skin changing; other times, it is simply hereditary. This is often an area that does not respond to healthy exercise and diet. The accumulated fat beneath the chin can often cause the skin to droop down and make you look older than you are.
Chin liposuction is able to remove excess fat, enhance the jawline and make you look more youthful.

Am I a good candidate for chin liposuction?
To be an appropriate candidate for chin liposuction, you will need to:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a BMI of 30 or lower
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Have reasonable expectations of what the procedure can achieve.
There is no maximum age limit for chin liposuction; however, older patients will not have as good skin laxity as those who are younger.
How is chin liposuction performed?
Chin liposuction is performed under a local anaesthetic, so you will be awake but unable to feel any pain or discomfort. However, if you do not wish to be awake, you can have Centre for Surgery’s general anaesthetic known as TIVA.
With TIVA, you will be asleep, but you will not be using breathing machines or tubes.
Chin liposuction involves making several incisions underneath the chin and near the ears. These are done to ensure they will be as minimally noticeable as possible.
Centre for Surgery then uses the PAL lipo technique.
This allows for the excess fat beneath the chin to be removed. The area will be contoured to ensure you have the best possible results.
The whole procedure will take about 45 minutes.
What is the recovery period like?
After chin liposuction, you may experience some bruising and/or swelling around the chin area. If you experience any pain and discomfort, you can manage this with appropriate medication.
You will be given a compression garment, which you will be required to wear around the chin. This will help to not only sculpt the chin and keep it in the best shape possible, but it will also speed up the recovery period and reduce swelling and bruising. For the first three days, you will need to wear the garment for 24 hours a day, except when bathing. Ensure you do not get the garment wet in order to avoid any infections occurring. After the first three days, you will have to wear the garment for a further three weeks, but only during the day.
You will need to avoid any strenuous physical activity for two weeks. This will help to avoid any damage to the incision sites.
You will have scars as a result of the incisions. These will appear to be more noticeable directly after the procedure. However, with time these scars will fade and will be unnoticeable.
