Feeling self-conscious about prominent ears is more common than many people realise. Whether it’s because they stick out more than usual, appear asymmetrical, or attract unwanted attention, the shape and position of the ears can have a significant impact on someone’s self-esteem. One of the questions people often ask us when seeking a solution is: Can I get my ears pinned back without surgery?
The short answer is yes, there are some non-surgical options available. However, these options are quite limited in their effectiveness, especially for adults. In most cases, surgical otoplasty remains the most reliable and long-lasting solution for permanently reshaping or repositioning the ears. In this article from Centre for Surgery, we’ll look at all the possibilities, both surgical and non-surgical, to help you understand which route might be right for you.

What Does ‘Pinning Back Ears’ Mean?
When people say they want their ears “pinned back,” they’re generally referring to correcting ears that protrude too far from the head. This can be a congenital feature or something that becomes more noticeable as a person gets older. The term refers to changing the angle between the ear and the side of the head to create a flatter, more balanced appearance.
The aim is not only aesthetic. While some people simply dislike the way their ears look, others may have experienced teasing or feel a deep sense of embarrassment about their appearance. Addressing prominent ears can make a significant difference to someone’s self-confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Otoplasty: The Most Effective Way to Reshape the Ears
If you’re looking for a permanent and reliable solution to prominent ears, otoplasty is by far the most effective option. Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to change the shape, position, or size of the ears. Most commonly, it involves creating or enhancing the natural fold of the ear and repositioning the ear cartilage so that the ears lie closer to the head.
At Centre for Surgery, we perform otoplasty on adults only. We do not carry out ear surgery on individuals under the age of 18. This is because children’s ears are still developing, and we believe that decisions about altering one’s appearance should be made with full maturity and understanding of the outcomes.

The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation for added comfort. Most patients can go home the same day. Recovery is relatively straightforward, with an otoplasty headband usually worn for several days to protect the ears and maintain their new shape. Bruising and swelling are common but temporary. Most people return to normal activities within a week, although contact sports should be avoided for longer.

The results of otoplasty are long-lasting and natural-looking. Once the healing is complete, the new ear shape is permanent and doesn’t require further maintenance.
What About Non-Surgical Options?
Understandably, not everyone is ready to commit to surgery. Whether due to cost, concerns about recovery time, or simply a preference to avoid invasive procedures, some people are interested in non-surgical ways to alter the appearance of their ears.
Let’s take a closer look at the main non-surgical alternatives.
Ear Moulding – For Infants Only
Ear moulding is a non-invasive technique used to correct ear shape shortly after birth. In the first weeks of life, a baby’s ears are very soft and malleable because of the presence of maternal oestrogen. During this time, a custom-made mould can gently reshape the cartilage, correcting issues such as protruding ears, lop ear, or constricted ear.
This technique is entirely painless and doesn’t involve any incisions. However, it must be done within the first few weeks of life, ideally before the baby is 6 weeks old. After this window, the cartilage hardens, and the opportunity for non-surgical moulding is lost.
Unfortunately, this means ear moulding is not an option for older children, teenagers, or adults. Once the ear has reached its mature shape and structure, only surgery can provide lasting changes.
Earfold – A Minimally Invasive Technique (But Not Always Suitable)
Earfold was once marketed as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional otoplasty. It involved placing a small, curved implant under the skin of the ear to hold it closer to the head. The implant was made of a metal alloy and pre-curved to mimic the natural fold of the ear. The procedure could be done under local anaesthetic with minimal downtime.
While Earfold did offer a quicker solution with less recovery time, it had some limitations. It was only suitable for patients with mild to moderate ear prominence, and it could not address more complex ear shapes or asymmetry. Some patients also experienced complications such as visibility of the implant, discomfort, or infection. As a result, the popularity of Earfold declined over time, and many surgeons, including those at Centre for Surgery, now prefer the precision and customisation that traditional otoplasty offers.
It’s also worth noting that Earfold is no longer widely available, as the product was eventually withdrawn from many markets. If you’re considering this option, it’s essential to check whether the procedure is still being offered and what your surgeon’s experience with it is.
Why Surgery Remains the Gold Standard for Ear Correction
While it’s tempting to hope for a quick fix, the reality is that non-surgical options for correcting prominent ears are extremely limited, particularly once a person is past infancy. The structure of the ear is made from firm cartilage that doesn’t respond to external pressure or reshaping after a certain age.
Surgical otoplasty remains the only method that can provide a tailored, lasting result that addresses not just ear prominence but also symmetry, shape, and proportion to the face. The procedure can be adapted to each individual’s anatomy and goals, which means the outcomes are both reliable and natural-looking.
Furthermore, otoplasty is a one-time procedure. Once done, it doesn’t need ongoing treatments or adjustments. This makes it a worthwhile investment for those who have spent years feeling unhappy with their ear appearance.
Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?
If you’re over the age of 18 and in good general health, you may be a suitable candidate for otoplasty. The procedure is ideal for individuals who:
-
Feel self-conscious about ears that stick out too far
-
Have ears that are uneven or asymmetrical
-
Want a permanent and natural-looking solution
-
Are prepared to undergo a short surgical procedure with some recovery time
During your consultation, our specialist surgeon will examine your ears, discuss your concerns, and explain what can realistically be achieved. Every procedure is tailored to the individual, with careful planning to ensure the best possible outcome.
We understand that choosing to undergo surgery is a big decision, and we’re here to guide you through every step of the process, from your first consultation to your final follow-up.
What If I’m Not Ready for Surgery?
If you’re not quite ready to commit to surgery, that’s completely understandable. It may help to have a consultation anyway. Even if you decide not to go ahead with a procedure, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of your options and what each approach can and cannot achieve.
At Centre for Surgery, we never pressure anyone into treatment. Our role is to provide honest, evidence-based advice so you can make an informed decision in your own time.
Being wary of so-called non-surgical ear reshaping treatments being promoted online is also important. Many of these have no clinical evidence, and some can even be harmful. If you see clips, bands, or devices promising to “train” your ears to lie flatter over time, it’s best to approach them with caution. Once adult ear cartilage has fully developed, it cannot be reshaped by external pressure alone.
