The optimal age for otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery, is when the ears have reached their full size, which typically occurs around five to six years old. At this age, children are usually in the early years of primary school. They can understand and follow post-operative care instructions effectively but have not been in school long enough to potentially face teasing or bullying from peers about their ears. Addressing the issue early can prevent it from impacting their self-confidence and self-image. However, at Centre for Surgery, we perform this procedure only on individuals who are 18 years or older.

Can Otoplasty Make The Ears Smaller?
Technically, otoplasty does not reduce the actual size of the ears. The dimensions of the ear remain the same. Instead, the procedure involves repositioning the ears closer to the scalp, which creates a flatter and less prominent appearance when viewed from the front.
One of the key areas addressed during otoplasty is the anti-helix, the curve in the middle of the ear. In some individuals, this curve is less pronounced, causing the ears to protrude more. By enhancing the definition of the anti-helix, the ears can be made to sit closer to the head.
Another focal point of the surgery is the conchal bowl, the deep central part of the outer ear. By adjusting the conchal bowl, the surgeon can set the ear back towards the scalp. This adjustment also contributes to the ears appearing flatter and less noticeable from the front.
Through these modifications, otoplasty effectively alters the ear’s position and shape to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look, even though the actual size of the ear remains unchanged.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Otoplasty?
The recovery period for otoplasty is typically around one week. During this time, you may have an incision behind the ear with sutures that are usually removed after a week. Swelling and discomfort are common initially, but these symptoms gradually improve over a few weeks. After this recovery phase, you should be able to return to work, school, or your regular activities without any issues.
