At Centre for Surgery, our surgeons often perform various types of cosmetic surgery for the breasts, including making them larger, reducing their size, or lifting them. We’ve noticed that many of our patients have similar questions about the nipples, both during in-person consultations and on our social media platforms. To make things easier for everyone, we’ve put together the answers to the most commonly asked questions about nipples.

Will I lose feeling in my nipples after getting breast implants?
A lot of people worry about losing sensation in their nipples or even in their entire breasts when they’re thinking about getting breast augmentation surgery. This concern is understandable because the operation involves altering the nerves, which can affect how your nipples feel. This could happen with other types of breast surgery too, like breast reductions or lifts.
The size of the implant can make a difference. Generally, the bigger the implant, the higher the chance that you might lose some feeling in your nipples. Also, if you have a smaller build or smaller breasts to begin with, you might be more at risk because the skin and tissues need to stretch a lot to fit the new implant. Where the implant is placed and the type of incision used can also have an impact.
During your one-on-one consultation, we’ll go over all the potential risks so you know exactly what to expect. The reassuring news is that most people find that any loss of nipple sensation is only temporary. After a few weeks or months, the nerves usually heal and normal sensation returns. In fact, some people find that their nipples are even more sensitive than before during the recovery period.
Can Inverted Nipples Be Fixed?
Inverted nipples are quite common, affecting around one in 10 people in the UK. They usually start to appear around puberty and can become more pronounced due to factors like pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The reason the nipples turn inward is usually because the breast milk ducts are shorter than usual. There are varying degrees of severity, and milder cases might be treatable without surgery. However, if non-surgical methods don’t work, we can effectively correct inverted nipples through a straightforward and safe surgical procedure here at Centre for Surgery. During inverted nipple surgery, the milk ducts are separated or divided to let the nipple point outward, and absorbable stitches are used internally to keep the nipple in its new position as it heals.
If you’ve recently noticed that your nipples have become inverted, it’s essential to consult a GP or a breast surgeon. This is because sudden changes like this could be a sign of an underlying medical condition that needs further investigation.
Will Nipple Reduction Affect the Length of My Nipples?
Nipples can become enlarged for various reasons, including genetic factors, hormonal changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or even weight changes. This can sometimes make people self-conscious and even influence the types of clothes they feel comfortable wearing. Nipple reduction surgery aims to address this by reducing both the width and the length of the nipples. The surrounding dark skin area, known as the areola, can also be made smaller if needed.
This type of cosmetic surgery is often done alongside other procedures like a breast lift or breast reduction to achieve the desired look. So yes, if you’re concerned about the length of your nipples, a nipple reduction can be an effective way to address this issue.
Can the Areola Be Made Smaller?
Yes, reducing the size of the areola is a procedure that many people opt for. Some women have always felt unhappy with the size or shape of their areolas, which is the pigmented circle of skin around the nipple. Others notice changes in their areolas due to significant weight loss or gain, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. These changes can result in the areola becoming stretched, elongated, discoloured, or even uneven in texture. Asymmetry between the two areolas is also a common issue.
During areola reduction surgery, the objective is to make the areola smaller and more symmetrical. Typically, a small circle of skin around the areola is removed, and then the surrounding skin is pulled inward and stitched to the newly resized areola. The result is a more balanced, rounded appearance.
If you’re undergoing a breast reduction, our surgeons at Centre for Surgery will commonly include areola reduction as part of the procedure. This ensures that the size of the areola is in proportion with the new, reduced size of the breast.
Do They Remove Your Nipples During Breast Lift Surgery?
No, your nipples are not usually removed during a breast lift surgery. Many women opt for this procedure to address issues like sagging breasts or nipples that point downwards, which can happen due to ageing, weight loss, or after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In a breast lift operation, the breast tissue and nipples are reshaped and repositioned to sit higher on the chest, giving a more youthful and pleasing look. Generally, the nipple stays attached to a piece of breast tissue that has its own blood supply. This ensures that the nipple and the surrounding areola continue to receive blood and nutrients, keeping them healthy. The nipple is then moved to a higher position on the breast without being detached.
So, if you’re concerned about the nipples being removed during a breast lift, you can generally put those worries to rest. The aim is to lift and reshape, not to remove.
Can You Still Breastfeed After Cosmetic Breast Surgery?
Yes, it’s often still possible to breastfeed after having cosmetic breast surgery, although the specific surgical technique used can influence your ability to do so.
For breastfeeding to happen, the milk ducts need to be connected to the nipple. In breast augmentation surgeries, the implants are usually placed behind the milk-producing glandular tissue, so breastfeeding is generally still feasible afterwards.

However, for breast reduction or uplift procedures, the situation can be a bit different. In these surgeries, our surgeons at Centre for Surgery typically move the nipple and areola to a higher position, keeping them attached to a ‘pedicle,’ which is a piece of tissue that has its own blood and nerve supply. This can sometimes mean that some milk ducts are no longer connected, affecting the milk supply. You might still be able to produce some milk, but it may not be enough to fully breastfeed your baby.
If breastfeeding is a significant concern for you, it’s an important topic to discuss during your consultation at our Baker Street clinic. You may even choose to delay the surgery until after you’ve finished having children to minimise any potential issues with breastfeeding.
