What inspired you to specialise in rhinoplasty and breast surgery?
My passion for plastic surgery was driven by the opportunity to create both aesthetic and functional improvements for my patients. Rhinoplasty, in particular, is a fascinating field because the nose is such a defining feature of the face. Even a small adjustment can have a profound impact on a person’s overall appearance and confidence. However, rhinoplasty is also one of the most complex procedures in plastic surgery, requiring a deep understanding of anatomy, surgical technique, and artistry. I was drawn to that challenge and the ability to refine my skills over time.
Breast surgery, on the other hand, offers a different type of transformation. Whether it is augmentation, reduction, or reconstruction, these procedures can have a life-changing impact. I enjoy helping patients achieve results that enhance their self-esteem and restore their confidence. -
You have a special interest in ultrasonic rhinoplasty. How does this technique differ from traditional methods?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a significant advancement in nasal surgery. Traditional rhinoplasty often involves the use of chisels and hammers to reshape the nasal bones, which can lead to more trauma, swelling, and an unpredictable healing process. With ultrasonic rhinoplasty, I use specialised instruments that emit high-frequency ultrasonic energy to precisely sculpt the bones without damaging the surrounding soft tissues and blood vessels.
This technique allows for more controlled refinement of the nasal structure, resulting in smoother contours and a more predictable healing process. Patients experience less bruising and swelling, and the recovery time is often shorter compared to traditional methods. The precision of ultrasonic rhinoplasty is particularly beneficial in cases of complex nasal anatomy or revision surgery, where even minor adjustments can make a significant difference. -
Revision rhinoplasty is known to be one of the most challenging plastic surgery procedures. What makes it so complex?
Revision rhinoplasty presents unique challenges because the nasal structures have already been altered in previous surgeries. Scar tissue, weakened cartilage, and changes in nasal support can make the procedure much more difficult than a primary rhinoplasty. Each case is different, and careful planning is essential to restore both function and aesthetics.
I approach revision rhinoplasty with meticulous attention to detail. Sometimes, I need to use cartilage grafts, often taken from the rib or ear, to rebuild structural support. The key to success is understanding the specific issues from the previous surgery and developing a customised surgical plan that addresses the patient’s concerns while maintaining long-term stability. Given the complexity of these cases, I always emphasise realistic expectations and the importance of patience in the healing process. -
You are one of the few surgeons in the UK who performs custom implants for pectus excavatum and Poland syndrome. Can you explain what these conditions are and how implants can help?
Pectus excavatum is a condition where the chest wall is sunken, creating a concave appearance. Poland syndrome is a congenital disorder characterised by underdevelopment or absence of chest muscles, often affecting one side of the body. Both conditions can have a significant impact on a person’s self-confidence and, in some cases, their physical function.
Custom implants are an excellent solution for these patients. Unlike traditional implants, which come in standard shapes and sizes, custom implants are designed specifically for the individual’s anatomy. Using advanced 3D imaging technology, I can create implants that perfectly match the contours of the patient’s chest, ensuring a natural and symmetrical appearance. The implants are made from medical-grade silicone and are designed to integrate seamlessly with the body’s natural tissues.
This approach provides a permanent, natural-looking correction with minimal downtime. Many patients who have struggled with self-consciousness for years find that custom implants restore their confidence and allow them to feel comfortable in their own bodies. -
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a plastic surgeon is witnessing the positive impact that surgery has on my patients' lives. Whether it’s a patient who has struggled with breathing difficulties and finally finds relief through rhinoplasty or someone who has lived with a chest deformity and can now wear fitted clothing with confidence, these transformations go beyond physical appearance.
Plastic surgery is not just about aesthetics—it’s about improving quality of life. The emotional and psychological benefits that patients experience after a successful procedure are incredibly fulfilling. Seeing their happiness and self-assurance return is what drives my passion for this field. -
How do you ensure that your patients achieve the best possible outcomes?
The key to achieving great results is a combination of careful planning, precision in surgery, and thorough aftercare. I take the time to understand each patient’s goals and expectations, ensuring they have a realistic understanding of what can be achieved. During consultations, I use digital imaging and 3D simulations where appropriate, so patients can visualise potential outcomes.
In surgery, I focus on achieving balance and harmony, whether it’s refining the nasal structure or sculpting a custom implant. My goal is always to create natural-looking results that complement the patient’s features.
Postoperative care is just as important as the procedure itself. I provide detailed aftercare instructions and closely monitor my patients’ recovery to ensure optimal healing. The healing process is unique for each patient, and having open communication throughout is crucial for the best results.
