Why does the cost vary so much?
The single biggest factor is how much of the capsule — the layer of scar tissue the body forms around every implant — is removed.
- Simple explantation removes the implant only, leaving a soft capsule in place — the shortest procedure and the lowest cost.
- Capsulectomy removes the implant plus part or all of the capsule — appropriate for capsular contracture, rupture with gel migration, or where the capsule is symptomatic.
- En bloc capsulectomy removes the implant and capsule together as a single intact unit — the most technically demanding approach, used where BIA-ALCL is confirmed or suspected, and not always feasible depending on capsule thickness.
- Concurrent procedures — a breast lift or fat transfer to restore shape after removal — add to the total but cost less combined than as two separate operations.
How much is removal with a breast lift or fat transfer?
After implants are removed, the breasts are smaller and — depending on implant size, how long they were in place, and skin quality — often have some loose skin. Restoring shape in the same operation is common:
- Removal with a breast lift (mastopexy): from £8,000 — reshapes and elevates the breast where there’s significant skin laxity.
- Removal with fat transfer: from £7,000 — restores modest natural volume without new implants.
Doing the lift or fat transfer at the same session shares the theatre time, anaesthetic, and aftercare, so it’s more cost-effective than staging the procedures separately.
How much is implant removal and replacement?
If you want to keep implants but change the size, shape, or type, removal and replacement in one operation starts from £6,500. The old implants come out and the new ones go in during the same procedure, so you are not charged twice for the removal. Where a capsulectomy is also needed the price rises accordingly.

Is breast implant removal available on the NHS?
Breast implant removal for cosmetic reasons is generally not funded by the NHS. However, NHS funding may be available where implants are causing significant documented health problems — for example confirmed BIA-ALCL, severe capsular contracture with documented symptoms, or implant rupture with clinical complications — and for implants originally placed for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Each case is assessed individually by the relevant NHS trust, with no guarantee of funding. Your surgeon can advise at consultation whether your case is likely to meet NHS criteria. Centre for Surgery offers self-funded access for all patients, including those whose original implants were placed elsewhere or abroad.
