1. Our CQC rating

Our hospital, registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as Centre for Surgery – Baker Street, is rated Good overall. The CQC rates every service on five key questions. Our ratings, from the CQC report published on 16 May 2023, are:

Key question Rating Date of rating
Overall Good 16 May 2023
Safe Good 16 May 2023
Effective Good 16 May 2023
Caring Good 16 May 2023
Responsive Good 16 May 2023
Well-led Requires improvement 16 May 2023

These are our most recent ratings: the CQC has not inspected or rated our hospital since. The full report, including the inspectors’ findings for each key question and what they asked us to improve under Well-led, is on the CQC website: read our CQC report and rating. The rating panel above comes directly from the CQC and updates automatically if our rating changes.

2. What the ratings mean

After an inspection, the CQC gives a rating for each of five key questions, and an overall rating:

Safe
Are people protected from abuse and avoidable harm?
Effective
Does people’s care, treatment and support achieve good outcomes and promote a good quality of life, based on the evidence?
Caring
Do staff involve people and treat them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect?
Responsive
Are services organised so that they meet people’s needs?
Well-led
Do the leadership, management and governance of the organisation make sure it provides high-quality care that is based around people’s needs, encourages learning and innovation, and promotes an open and fair culture?

Each key question, and the service overall, is rated on a four-point scale. Good is the second-highest rating; Requires improvement and Inadequate are the two lower ratings. A service can be rated Good overall while one key question is rated differently, as ours is for Well-led.

3. Our registration

Every provider that carries out surgery in England must be registered with the CQC: it is a criminal offence to provide regulated activities without registration. Our registration details are:

Registered provider
M Sarwar Limited, trading as Centre for Surgery (CQC provider ID 1-8123032215)
Registered location
Centre for Surgery – Baker Street, 95–97 Baker Street, London W1U 6RN (CQC location ID 1-12168174584)
Regulated activities
Surgical procedures; treatment of disease, disorder or injury; diagnostic and screening procedures
Registered Manager
Attika Valli

The location record carries our inspection rating, and the provider record shows the company that holds the registration. Registration is not a one-off approval: the CQC monitors registered services continuously and can inspect at any time, with or without notice.

4. How to check a clinic’s CQC registration

Anyone can check a clinic’s registration and rating free of charge. Go to cqc.org.uk, search for the clinic by name or postcode, and check:

  • that the clinic is registered for surgical procedures at the address where your operation will take place;
  • its current rating, and the date of its last inspection;
  • the inspection report, including anything the inspectors asked it to improve.

CQC registration is one of several checks worth making before cosmetic surgery. Our guide to choosing a plastic surgeon explains how to check a surgeon’s qualifications and registration with the General Medical Council, and our patient journey shows what to expect from your first call to your final check-up.

5. How the CQC inspects a surgical hospital

CQC inspectors look at the whole patient pathway. They review how safety is managed in theatre, infection prevention and control, consent, anaesthesia, staff training and qualifications, patient records, complaint handling, and how the service is led and governed. They speak to patients, staff and managers, and review records on site and remotely.

How often a service is inspected depends on its previous rating and on any information or concerns the CQC receives. The CQC introduced a new way of assessing services in 2024, and ratings stay in place until the CQC carries out a new assessment.

6. Beyond the rating: our outcomes and complaints

Alongside the CQC’s assessment, we publish our own clinical outcomes and patient safety data each year, including our infection rate, revision rate, unplanned returns to theatre and the number of complaints we receive, with the definition behind each figure. If you have a concern about your care, our complaints policy explains how to raise it and what to expect.

Industry awards are a different kind of recognition from regulation, and they are not a measure of clinical safety. We list the ones we have received, and the shortlists we have reached, on our awards and accolades page.
