What are split earlobes?

Split earlobes most commonly involved having a split in the earlobe where an ear piercing normally would be. In many cases, the earlobe split is often a small hole that is enlarged; in other cases, there is a full split of the earlobe. In either case, earlobe surgery is the best way to correct the split earlobe. Most people develop split earlobes from wearing large or heavy earrings for many years. Over time, the added weight of the earrings combined with the natural ageing process may result in an ear piercing giving way and tearing either fully or partially. Split earlobes may also occur because of earring plugs designed to make an ear piercing larger. Certain types of cheap jewellery often contain nickel which may be responsible for causing an allergic reaction, which could cause a split earlobe. A traumatic injury can also cause a split earlobe.

What does split earlobe surgery involve?

We would first recommend you have an in-person consultation with one of our plastic surgeons to assess the extent of your split earlobe. Your surgeon will take your medical history, including any medicines he may be taking and will perform in an examination of your split earlobe. You will be able to have the split earlobe procedure once you have had your consultation the same day if you prefer for added convenience. Split earlobe surgery is straightforward to carry out and takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the extent of surgical correction required. The surgeon will first inject a local anaesthetic to eliminate any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Your surgeon will then repair the split earlobe by surgical removal of the skin around the split earlobe. This helps to create an appropriate surface that should heal and seal the split. As part of the procedure, the surgeon may close off any earlobe piercing. It takes approximately six weeks for full healing after earlobe surgery. If you wish, you may have your ears pierced after this time, although we would recommend avoiding the exact position where a previous split has occurred.

You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure provided there is no impact on your earlobe repair.

So glad I went with centre for surgery, the whole process went very smoothly from the consultations down to the actual day of the procedure. I was so nervous on the day but the whole team put me at ease and I’m happy with my results as I feel a lot more comfortable wearing certain clothes now. My surgeon was Alberto Di Giuseppe who performed a breast Augmentation on me, and I would definitely recommend as he was very clear on what the outcome of the surgery would be and which size would look the best for my frame.

This was overall a great experience, all the staff at Centre for Surgery were friendly and put me at ease. It is a nerve wracking thing to go through an op but the staff were so nice. Mr Ertan has got a great team around him. On the day of the operation everything went smoothly to plan, there was no delay or holdups, I had another consultation with Mr Ertan who confirmed what was going to be done and that I was still happy to proceed. I was prepped for the procedure, I met with the anaesthetist who again was really nice and put me at ease explaining his role. After the procedure I woke up with the nurse by my side making sure I was OK and checking on me, I was able to stay in the clinic until I was ready to leave and was not rushed at all. I was well looked after from the start to the point when I was discharged. Post operation I was staying at a local hotel it was so close there was no point in even getting a taxi and I was able to walk back where my partner was waiting for me. I was expecting a lot of bruising to both my eyes but there was very little if any by the time the cast came off after 7 days, I am now at the two week post operation point and it is healing well with no outwardly visible bruising or scaring. The next milestone is a checkup at the 6 week point with my surgeon. If you're thinking of having something like this done I would highly recommend getting in touch with Centre for Surgery.
