The popularity of social media, particularly platforms like Instagram, has indeed changed the way people research and approach cosmetic surgery. It’s become a common tool for finding inspiration, comparing results, and even choosing a potential surgeon. However, it’s essential to approach this resource with a critical eye and informed understanding.
While Instagram can provide a broad view of a surgeon’s work and showcase spectacular transformations, it is important to remember that social media is often a highlight reel. Photos might be carefully selected, and the seemingly ‘perfect’ results you see may not represent the full range of outcomes for every patient.
Furthermore, photos can be edited or altered, and what you see may not be a completely accurate depiction of a surgeon’s work. The same procedure can also look different on different bodies, so the results you see in photos may not necessarily reflect how you will look post-surgery.
When deciding on a surgeon or clinic for cosmetic surgery, don’t rely solely on social media. Be sure to read patient reviews, verify the surgeon’s qualifications and experience, and consult with them directly about your expectations and concerns. A successful cosmetic surgery experience hinges on a lot more than just attractive Instagram photos.

5 top tips when viewing cosmetic surgery photos
In the contemporary digital age, the influence of social media on our perception of beauty and the impact it has on our decision-making process regarding cosmetic procedures cannot be understated. However, when contemplating such significant decisions as undergoing plastic surgery, it’s crucial to maintain a clear and educated perspective. To gain some expert insight on the matter, we recently had an enlightening conversation with our esteemed plastic surgeon, Dr Michail Vourvachis, discussing the vital aspects patients need to consider while perusing images on social media platforms.
Truthfulness
The first step is to verify the genuineness of the photos. In an era where we have numerous image editing tools such as Photoshop, Facetune, etc., it’s vital to confirm that the photos truly represent authentic, achievable surgical results. Are there any apparent signs of digital alterations in the images?
Wide Range of Images
Look for a diverse range of photos showing different patients and various procedures and illustrating the multiple stages of their surgical journey, both pre and post-operation. Each patient’s case is unique, with myriad considerations for each procedure. For instance, in breast augmentation surgery, the type of implants, the preferred incision location, the placement of the implant, and more will vary from patient to patient. The more comprehensive and varied the information a surgeon provides on their social media platforms, the better it is for you to grasp the multitude of options they can offer.
Evolution Over Time
Pay close attention to the timeline documented through a patient’s post-surgical photos. The appearance of surgical results just a few days post-operation can drastically differ from the final outcome visible months later. It’s important to remember that the process of recovery and the evolution of results is a journey, and photos should accurately represent this trajectory from start to finish, giving you a true picture of the early stages as well as the final outcomes.
Photographic Manipulations
It’s quite easy to enhance an image or video by altering the angle, adjusting the lighting, or changing the backdrop. Such tweaks can significantly skew one’s perception. Therefore, while reviewing images, ensure they have been captured from a standardised position. This will help you discern if the results you’re observing are genuinely due to surgical intervention and not the product of creative photography or image enhancement techniques.
Fresh Content
It’s important to look for consistently posted, new content. Be wary of surgeons who frequently recycle images or only showcase their best results. You should be able to view images and videos from an assortment of procedures across a broad spectrum of patients. Every patient and every surgery is unique. Seeing how different individuals respond to the same type of procedure can provide you with a more realistic expectation for your potential results.
Other factors to bear in mind when viewing Before & After Cosmetic Surgery Photos
Consistency in Lighting and Position
Dr Vourvachis emphasises that consistency in lighting and position is key when comparing before and after photos. It’s common for lighting to be manipulated in ‘after’ photos to cast flattering shadows and enhance the appearance of results. Similarly, the position or angle of the body can dramatically alter the appearance of results. Look for photos where the patient is in the same position and the lighting is consistent in both ‘before’ and ‘after’ images.
Multiple Angles
According to Dr Vourvachis, a single photo can only tell you so much. Look for sets of photos taken from multiple angles. This allows for a more comprehensive view of the results and reduces the potential for manipulation or hiding of unwanted results.
