When Should You Consider Hair Transplant?

FUT Hair Transplant – A guide to Hair Restoration

To determine a good candidate for FUT hair transplant surgery, the key is to identify the hair loss pattern of the individual. Hair loss can be a normal occurrence to a certain degree that is until you start experiencing severe shedding of hair, balding at worst.

If you start noticing shedding of hair more than usual then you should consider speaking to an expert before it is too late because you need to have some hair on the back and sides of your head to opt for hair transplant. You must generally have good health and also have realistic expectations about the possible outcomes achievable from the aesthetic technique.

The FUT Technique

The technique used to perform FUT hair transplant is also commonly known as the strip technique. This is because a linear strip of hair follicles is cut and extracted from the back or side of the scalp from which the healthy hair grafts are taken.

The strip taken from the chosen donor area which contains thousands of hair grafts will then be separated individually before being inserted back onto the scalp, which is done by the use of a microscope to select the grafts of suitable sizes.

The surgeon creates small incisions on the area to be treated and the harvested follicular grafts are then inserted into the incisions.

Benefits Of FUT Hair Transplant
  • Hair that is transplanted is more .
  • Maximises the amounts of grafts that can be harvested in a single hair transplant session.
  • Damage to hair grafts is minimised.
  • FUT hair transplant is less time consuming compared to FUE hair transplant making it considerably more affordable.
  • Larger areas can be treated in fewer sessions.
The Recovery

Expect some swelling after the procedure which will significantly reduce within a week and the patient can take pain killers if needed. It could take up to 2-3 weeks for the scalp to fully recover. We advise our patient not to carry out strenuous activities until the transplant has fully recovered, but after that they can go back to their normal routine.

After 10 weeks the transplanted hair will start to grow and after 6 months it will be long enough to groom. The treated area will start to become less detectable after a few days following your surgery and will become almost undetectable after about a week. In most cases, it may take up to a year for the full head of hair.

FUT TECHNIQUE VS FUE TECHNIQUE

FUE vs FUT
FUT or FUE - Which Option Is Better?

Both FUT and FUE are equally effective methods for grafting hair naturally, so there is no best method. However, the choice of the option depends on the results desired by the individual as well as the severity of the hair loss issue. The best options for you must be discussed with your surgeon during your consultation as the result you achieve will be heavily dependent on the choice of treatment.

Here are some things you need to consider:

  • FUT leaves you with scars in the donor area because strips of flesh are removed.
  • FUE is very time consuming due to the fact that singular follicles are removed at one time.
  • FUT will involve stitches or staples after the procedure, this means longer healing.
  • FUE involves little disks of flesh being removed from the donor area, this is so surgeons are able to get the follicles without leaving scars.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate?

All patients should be in good health and have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with FUT hair transplant surgery.

We do not treat patients below the age of 18 years of age.

Healing is better if patients refrain from or quit smoking.

FUT hair transplant is performed purely for cosmetic purposes, to help improve one’s image and self-esteem.

Ideally the FUT technique is recommended to men who have been losing hair to Male Pattern Baldness for 5 or more years. Men who have lost their hair for many years and has now stabilised are also a good candidate for this treatment.

In some cases. men who have lost their hair due to trauma, burns or cosmetic procedures such as facelift can also be treated.

FUT HAIR TRANSPLANT FAQS

Am I an ideal candidate for FUT hair transplant?

FUT technique is ideal for men who have been losing hair due to Male Pattern Baldness or for those who have lost a lot of hair and has not stabilised.

How is the procedure performed?

FUT hair transplant is known for it’s strip technique where a linear strip of healthy hair follicles is cut out and extracted from the donor area which is then injected back to the area to be treated.

Is FUT hair transplant a solution for hair loss?

The result may not be necessary due to various factors but the transplanted hair from FUT hair transplant is more compared to FUE hair transplant.

What is the recovery period like?

You can expect some swelling but will reduce significantly within a week and pain medication can be taken if needed. The treated area will start to become less detectable after a few days but will become almost undetectable after about a week.

What are the complications associated with the procedure?

Scarring can occur from the strip technique but the surgeon can perform the cut in a place where the hair can cover the scar. Healing is quite slower as compared to the FUT technique but also depends on you as an individual.

Will I be left with scars?

Yes, the strip technique used for FUT hair transplant does leave a noticeable scar which can be hidden, however, the procedure is not recommended to people who may want shorter hairstyles in the future.

FUT or FUE - which option is right for me?

The question between FUT hair transplant and FUE hair transplant is something you need to discuss with your surgeon in a consultation as the result you achieve will be heavily dependent on the choice of treatment.
