The benefits of FUT include:
Both FUT and FUE are equally effective methods for grafting hair naturally, so there is no best method. However, the choice of the option depends on the results desired by the individual as well as the severity of the hair loss issue. The best options for you must be discussed with your surgeon during your consultation as the result you achieve will be heavily dependent on the choice of treatment.
Here are some things you need to consider:
All patients should be in good health and have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with FUT hair transplant surgery.
We do not treat patients below the age of 18 years of age.
Healing is better if patients refrain from or quit smoking.
FUT hair transplant is performed purely for cosmetic purposes, to help improve one’s image and self-esteem.
Ideally, the FUT technique is recommended for men who have been losing hair to Male Pattern Baldness for 5 or more years. Men who have lost their hair for many years and has now stabilised are also a good candidate for this treatment.
In some cases. men who have lost their hair due to trauma, burns or cosmetic procedures such as face lift can also be treated.
The technique used to perform FUT hair transplant is also commonly known as the strip technique. This is because a linear strip of hair follicles is cut and extracted from the back or side of the scalp from which the healthy hair grafts are taken.
The strip taken from the chosen donor area which contains thousands of hair grafts will then be separated individually before being inserted back onto the scalp, which is done by the use of a microscope to select the grafts of suitable sizes.
The surgeon creates small incisions on the area to be treated and the harvested follicular grafts are then inserted into the incisions.
Expect some swelling after the procedure which will significantly reduce within a week and the patient can take painkillers if needed. It could take up to two to three weeks for the scalp to fully recover. We advise our patient not to carry out strenuous activities until the transplant has fully recovered, but after that, they can go back to their normal routine.
After 10 weeks the transplanted hair will start to grow and after six months it will be long enough to groom. The treated area will start to become less detectable after a few days following your surgery and will become almost undetectable after about a week. In most cases, it may take up to one year for the full head of hair.
FUT technique is ideal for men who have been losing hair due to Male Pattern Baldness or for those who have lost a lot of hair and has not stabilised.
FUT hair transplant is known for it’s strip technique where a linear strip of healthy hair follicles is cut out and extracted from the donor area which is then injected back to the area to be treated.
The result may not be necessary due to various factors but the transplanted hair from FUT hair transplant is more compared to FUE hair transplant.
You will notice hair will start to grow after 10 weeks. After six months the hair will be long enough to groom. It may take up to one year to achieve a full head of hair.
You can expect some swelling but will reduce significantly within a week and pain medication can be taken if needed. The treated area will start to become less detectable after a few days but will become almost undetectable after about a week.
Scarring can occur from the strip technique but the surgeon can perform the cut in a place where the hair can cover the scar. Healing is quite slower as compared to the FUT technique but also depends on you as an individual.
Yes, the strip technique used for FUT hair transplant does leave a noticeable scar which can be hidden, however, the procedure is not recommended to people who may want shorter hairstyles in the future.
The question between FUT hair transplant and FUE hair transplant is something you need to discuss with your surgeon in a consultation as the result you achieve will be heavily dependent on the choice of treatment. Here are some things you need to consider:
