Liposuction is one of the most effective cosmetic surgery procedures for removing excess fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise, and it’s completely understandable to have questions about the scarring it involves. Any surgery requiring an incision — including liposuction — will result in some degree of scarring. The good news is that liposuction incisions are among the smallest in cosmetic surgery, and the resulting lipo scars are typically minimal.
Will I Have Scars From Liposuction?
Yes — but liposuction scars are usually very minor. The cannula used to remove fat has a small diameter, so your surgeon only needs to make an incision large enough to insert it, which keeps scarring to a minimum. Most patients describe their fully healed liposuction scars as resembling a tiny skin blemish rather than a conventional surgical scar.
What Do Liposuction Scars Look Like?
Liposuction incisions are placed within natural body folds and creases wherever possible, which helps conceal them further. Scars may appear slightly raised in the early weeks, but they typically flatten and lighten to a pale colour over the first three months.
Patients with darker skin types may notice their scars appear somewhat more prominent or discoloured, even once fully healed — this is worth mentioning at consultation if it’s a personal concern.
Types of Liposuction Scars
Most liposuction scars heal as faint, flat marks that blend into the surrounding skin. Occasionally, healing follows a different course.
Hypertrophic scars are raised and firm but stay confined to the original incision site — the most common form of atypical scarring, and usually manageable with early treatment.
Keloid scars extend beyond the original incision and are typically darker and more raised. Patients with a personal or family history of keloid scarring should mention this at consultation, as it may influence aftercare planning.
Given how small liposuction incisions are, both are uncommon — but worth knowing about if your healing doesn’t follow the typical pattern.
Liposuction Scar Healing Timeline
First few weeks: Scars appear red or pink and may be slightly raised above the surrounding skin.
By 3 months: Most scars have noticeably flattened and lightened towards a paler colour — this is when the bulk of the visible improvement happens.
Over the following months to two years: Scars continue to soften and fade gradually, even without active treatment, eventually settling to their final, barely-visible appearance.
A photograph taken at six weeks will look considerably different from the same scar at six months — patience is a genuine part of the process.
Vaser Lipo Scars
Vaser liposuction uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat before it’s removed, rather than relying on the mechanical action of the cannula alone. The entry incisions used for Vaser are essentially the same as traditional liposuction — small, placed in inconspicuous locations, and following the same healing and fading timeline described above. Vaser doesn’t produce a different kind of scar at the incision site; the scar question is a wash between the two techniques.
Where Vaser is often discussed differently is skin quality, not scarring. The ultrasonic energy selectively targets fat while sparing surrounding nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, so many patients experience better skin retraction and a smoother final contour than with traditional liposuction alone — particularly relevant where skin laxity is already a concern. That’s a genuine consideration when comparing techniques, but it’s separate from how the entry-point scars themselves will look, which comes down to incision size and placement far more than which fat-removal technology is used.
Chin & Neck Liposuction Scars
Chin and neck liposuction (submental liposuction) removes excess fat from beneath the chin and along the jawline to address a double chin and sharpen the jawline contour. It uses the same small-cannula technique as body liposuction, so the same principles apply — but a few things are specific to this area.
The incision is typically less than a quarter of an inch, placed in an inconspicuous spot such as directly under the chin or behind the ear, where it’s easily hidden. Chin and neck liposuction scars are generally very well concealed and heal quickly, following the same colour progression described above, because the treated area is small and the incision so short.
The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic or TIVA, and typically takes one to two hours. For full detail on recovery — swelling, bruising, compression garment use, and timeline to returning to normal activities — see our dedicated guide.
How to Minimise Liposuction Scars
Follow your post-operative instructions in full. Our surgeons are experienced in positioning incisions within natural body folds and in managing liposuction scars — sticking closely to their guidance, particularly around avoiding strenuous exertion and direct sun exposure to healing wounds, makes a real difference to the final result.
Stay well hydrated. Good hydration supports skin moisture during the early healing phase, and well-hydrated skin tends to fade to match the surrounding tone more effectively.
Avoid smoking throughout your recovery, since it measurably slows healing and increases the risk of poorer scarring.
Apply silicone gel sheets once incisions have fully healed. These work by improving skin hydration and applying gentle compression, which helps limit the excess collagen production that makes some scars unduly raised or prominent.
Scar Treatment Options
Most liposuction scars fade well on their own over the first one to two years, without any active treatment. For scars that remain more noticeable than you’d like, further options include:
RF microneedling (Morpheus8). Combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to remodel the internal structure of the scar and stimulate new collagen formation, without the need for further surgery.
Laser scar revision. Improves the texture and colour of a scar over a course of sessions, particularly effective for scars that remain raised or discoloured.
Surgical scar revision. Reserved for scars that remain genuinely unsatisfactory once fully matured — a last-resort option, and one that’s rarely needed given how small liposuction incisions already are.
Most patients notice a substantial improvement after two to three sessions of non-surgical treatment, where it’s needed at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do liposuction scars go away completely?
They fade very significantly but don’t disappear entirely — as with any surgical scar. Given how small liposuction incisions are, most patients find their scars become genuinely difficult to notice once fully healed.
How long until liposuction scars are fully healed?
The most noticeable improvement happens by around three months, with scars continuing to soften and fade gradually for up to two years in some cases.
Does Vaser liposuction leave smaller scars than traditional liposuction?
Not really — the entry incisions are essentially the same size and placement for both. Vaser’s real advantage is more commonly associated with skin tightening and contour, not the appearance of the scar itself.
Are chin liposuction scars more visible than body liposuction scars?
No — if anything, chin and neck liposuction scars tend to be even less noticeable, since the incision is very short and placed somewhere naturally concealed, such as under the chin or behind the ear.
Will liposuction scars show in a bikini or swimwear?
Incisions are placed within natural body folds and creases wherever your anatomy allows, specifically to keep them as discreet as possible in normal clothing and swimwear.
