Liposuction remains one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures across the UK, helping people achieve a more contoured, refined physique by removing stubborn fat deposits. While traditional liposuction techniques effectively target localised fat, ultrasonic (VASER) liposuction offers genuinely enhanced precision for certain areas, using ultrasound energy to emulsify fat cells before removal.
At Centre for Surgery, we don’t treat VASER as a standalone replacement for traditional technique — we combine it with power-assisted liposuction (PAL) with fat equalisation, using VASER’s strength in dense, fibrous fat alongside PAL’s gentle, even fat removal for the best overall result. See our full comparison: power-assisted liposuction vs VASER.
What Is Ultrasonic (VASER) Liposuction?
Ultrasonic liposuction uses ultrasound-assisted technology to reshape and refine different areas of the body, targeting both small and larger fat deposits with precision. High-frequency ultrasonic waves emulsify fat cells before removal, reducing the mechanical trauma involved compared with cannula movement alone.

Liposuction is designed to remove excess fat from areas including the chin, neck, breasts, abdomen, hips, arms, thighs, and buttocks. The procedure involves small incisions through which a suction cannula is inserted to extract fat; with VASER specifically, ultrasonic waves are used first to break down fat cells before removal, reducing damage to surrounding blood vessels and nerves.
Ultrasonic Liposuction vs Traditional Liposuction
Ultrasonic liposuction offers genuine advantages in specific situations compared with traditional liposuction, particularly for denser or more fibrous fat.
Reduced Tissue Trauma
Both methods involve small incisions, but the mechanism differs: ultrasonic liposuction uses sound waves to separate fat cells from surrounding tissue before extraction, which can make removal smoother and reduce trauma to nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue compared with mechanical cannula movement alone.
Precision in Fibrous Areas
Ultrasound energy emulsifies fat with genuine accuracy, which is particularly valuable for denser, more fibrous fat — commonly found at the male chest, back, and flanks — that’s harder to remove with cannula alone.
Effective on Larger or More Stubborn Deposits
A tumescent solution is injected into the treatment area first, loosening fat before ultrasound waves separate it from surrounding tissue, allowing effective removal of larger fat deposits with less physical effort from the surgeon.
Reduced Blood Loss
The tumescent solution constricts blood vessels, minimising bleeding during the procedure; combined with reduced tissue trauma, this generally means less blood loss than traditional cannula-only techniques.
Some Skin-Tightening Effect
Ultrasound energy can stimulate a modest degree of collagen production, offering some additional skin-tightening effect alongside fat removal — though it’s not a substitute for surgical skin removal where laxity is significant.
Who Is a Suitable Candidate?
Good candidates for VASER liposuction have localised areas of excess fat — particularly denser or fibrous fat — that haven’t responded to a genuinely healthy lifestyle. It’s not a weight-loss procedure; it’s most effective for people close to their ideal weight looking to refine specific areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, or flanks.
A stable weight matters for lasting results, since significant weight fluctuation afterwards can affect the durability of your contouring. Good skin elasticity also helps, since VASER’s skin-tightening effect is modest rather than a substitute for surgical skin removal — those with more significant laxity may be better served by combining liposuction with a tummy tuck or thigh lift.
Non-smokers, or those able to stop smoking for at least four weeks before surgery, are generally better candidates, since smoking meaningfully affects healing. Good general health matters too — uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or immune compromise may affect suitability, all assessed properly at consultation.
How Does the Procedure Work?
VASER liposuction at Centre for Surgery is performed under TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) for larger or combined-area treatment, delivered entirely intravenously without inhaled anaesthetic gases, for a smoother recovery than a traditional general anaesthetic. Smaller, more targeted areas can sometimes be treated under local anaesthetic — your surgeon will confirm the right approach at consultation.
Your surgeon makes small incisions in the treatment area, then injects a tumescent solution that numbs the region and constricts blood vessels to reduce bleeding. A fine ultrasonic probe is then inserted, delivering high-frequency sound waves into the fatty tissue — this creates tiny microbubbles that gently separate fat from surrounding structures without damaging blood vessels, nerves, or connective tissue. Once emulsified, the fat is removed with a suction cannula, and incisions are closed before you’re moved to recovery to be monitored as the anaesthesia wears off.
How Much Does VASER Liposuction Cost?
VASER liposuction is priced identically to standard power-assisted liposuction (PAL) for the same treatment area, as set out in our liposuction cost guide. Combined-area or combined-technique pricing is confirmed individually at consultation. All packages include your surgeon’s fee, TIVA anaesthesia, theatre time at our CQC-regulated Baker Street facility, compression garment, your surgeon’s direct number for the first 24 hours, wound checks, and follow-up reviews. Your initial consultation is £100, redeemable against the cost of your procedure if you proceed. Finance is available through Chrysalis Finance, subject to status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ultrasonic liposuction better than traditional liposuction?
Neither is universally “better” — VASER is particularly effective for dense, fibrous fat and offers a modest skin-tightening effect, while PAL is gentler for general fat removal and preserves fat cells for transfer procedures. At Centre for Surgery, we combine both as needed rather than treating them as competing alternatives.
How long do ultrasonic liposuction results last?
Results are long-lasting provided you maintain a stable weight afterwards — removed fat cells don’t regenerate, but remaining fat cells elsewhere can still expand with significant weight gain.
