- Why Choose Centre for Surgery for Liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK. Over the years, several techniques have been developed to improve the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) was developed as a gentler method of removing fat cells, and, combined with fat equalisation, it remains the foundation of the liposuction technique we use at Centre for Surgery.
What Is Power-Assisted Liposuction?
Liposuction is our most commonly performed procedure at Centre for Surgery. We adopt a results-driven approach, matching the technique to the patient rather than defaulting to one method regardless of anatomy — our liposuction surgeons are experienced across all types of liposuction we offer, including PAL and VASER. Lipo is ideal for stubborn fat that’s proven resistant to diet and exercise despite genuine effort.
PAL uses the MicroAire technology developed in the USA, and represents a significant improvement on older, traditional forms of liposuction in its ability to remove even resistant pockets of fat cleanly and precisely.

What Are the Benefits of PAL?
PAL is a genuine advancement over traditional liposuction. Manual liposuction can be physically demanding for the surgeon, which can increase the risk of uneven results, bruising, and swelling. PAL adds a gentle vibrating effect to the cannula, meaning the surgeon needs far less physical force to move it through tissue — this translates to less bruising, less swelling, and a faster recovery for the patient, along with increased precision when sculpting fibrous areas such as the back or chest.
PAL doesn’t generate heat, which means no risk of thermal skin burns from the technique itself — a genuine advantage worth knowing about regardless of which technique you ultimately choose. Fat removed with PAL also remains intact, meaning it can be used for fat transfer procedures where the patient wants this, including breast fat transfer and fat transfer to the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift, or BBL).
How We Combine PAL with VASER
At Centre for Surgery, PAL with fat equalisation is our standard liposuction technique, but for denser, more fibrous fat areas such as the male chest, back, and flanks, we often combine PAL with VASER, an ultrasound technology that emulsifies fat before removal. This isn’t a case of one technique being universally better than the other — VASER’s emulsification makes removal smoother and more precise in fibrous tissue, while PAL’s gentle mechanical action ensures the final contour is even. See our full comparison: power-assisted liposuction vs VASER.
We don’t offer laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo) at Centre for Surgery, since the heat it generates carries a genuine risk of skin burns — see our full explanation: why we don’t offer laser liposuction.
How Does Power-Assisted Liposuction Work?
Traditional liposuction involves passing a large-diameter cannula through subcutaneous fat, requiring significant physical force that can destroy the delicate fat cells being removed — fat removed this way generally can’t be used for fat grafting, since the cells are too damaged, and must be discarded.
PAL uses smaller-diameter cannulas vibrating at high frequency, gliding through tissue and gently detaching fat cells from their surrounding attachments before removal with gentle vacuum suction. This allows large amounts of fat to be removed efficiently while keeping the harvested cells viable, which is why many surgeons use PAL for liposuction breast reduction, where the fibrous nature of breast tissue makes technique especially important.
What Areas Can PAL Target?
PAL is highly effective for permanently removing stubborn fat from most areas of the body. A healthy diet and regular exercise remain the foundation of good results, but persistent pockets of fat — chest, arms, hips, knees, calves, and chin among them — often don’t fully resolve with lifestyle measures alone. PAL is also highly effective for 360 liposuction of the midsection for a more comprehensively sculpted result.
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for PAL?
PAL suits patients keen to address stubborn fat that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise. Both women and men can have the procedure — women most commonly treat the stomach, hips, or thighs, while men more often treat the midsection and chest, sometimes combined with male breast reduction for gynaecomastia. Patients with lower body fat who already exercise regularly may be good candidates for high-definition body sculpting.
PAL isn’t the ideal treatment in every case we see. Patients with significant loose or saggy skin — often following major weight loss — won’t get a satisfactory result from liposuction alone; a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is usually the better option for tightening skin alongside fat removal, and patients with more severe skin laxity following massive weight loss may be better suited to a body lift or belt lipectomy.
Recovery After Power-Assisted Liposuction
PAL is quick to perform with a comparatively fast recovery. At Centre for Surgery, liposuction is performed under TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia), delivered entirely intravenously without inhaled anaesthetic gases, for a smoother recovery with minimal risk of post-operative nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness compared with a traditional general anaesthetic.
We recommend one week off work after lipo and avoiding strenuous activity for the first four weeks, while keeping mobile around the home from the first week. Liposuction isn’t typically a painful procedure, and any discomfort is generally well managed with over-the-counter painkillers. Bruising and swelling usually take three to four weeks to settle.
How Much Does Liposuction Cost?
Current prices are set out in our liposuction cost guide. VASER is priced identically to PAL for the same treatment area. Treating multiple body areas increases the total cost accordingly, confirmed in writing after your consultation. All packages include your surgeon’s fee, TIVA anaesthesia, theatre time at our CQC-regulated Baker Street facility, your surgeon’s direct number for the first 24 hours, wound checks, and follow-up reviews. Your initial consultation is £100, redeemable against the cost of your procedure if you proceed. Finance is available through Chrysalis Finance, subject to status.
Why Choose Centre for Surgery for Liposuction?
Every liposuction procedure at Centre for Surgery is performed by a GMC-registered plastic surgeon at our purpose-built, CQC-regulated Baker Street clinic, rated “Good” overall. Our pre- and post-operative nursing teams provide dedicated care throughout, and you’ll have a patient coordinator as your point of contact for the full journey.
