Lip fillers are quickly becoming one of the most in-demand non-surgical treatments, with popular culture celebrities being highly influential. One clinic reported a 70 per cent rise in enquiries as a result of Kylie Jenner, while another reported a 200 per cent increase in demand as a result of Love Island’s Meghan Barton-Hanson.
So, what exactly are lip fillers, and what do you need to know before you get them?
What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers are designed to increase the volume of your lips. This is normally done with hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a natural temporary filler. There are numerous different types of filler which can be used. Some types of fillers include:
- Restylane
- Restylane-L
- Restylane Silk
- Juvederm Ultra XC
- Juvederm Volbella XC
Some surgeons may mix different types of fillers to help you achieve the best results.
How long will the procedure take?
Lip fillers can be completed within one hour. Before starting, a topical cream will be applied to your lips and the surrounding area. This will help to numb the lips, preventing any discomfort or pain being felt during the procedure. Once the numbing cream starts to take effect the injections can begin. The injections will take around 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
While the topical cream will help to minimise any pain, you may feel a slight prick when the needle is injected and may be able to feel the filler when it is being injected into the lips.
After the filler has been injected, the surgeon may massage the lips to ensure the filler is sitting in the ideal position. Ice may also be applied to the lips to help with any pain and to decrease swelling.
When will you see the results?
You will be able to notice the results almost immediately. Keep in mind that you will experience some swelling and redness following the injections. After the first 24 hours, the swelling will go down, and you will be able to notice the final results.
So, before you go ahead with lip fillers, what are some things you need to consider?
Can the lip fillers be reversed?
If you are unhappy with your lips after you have had fillers, you may wish to have the filler dissolved. Whether or not this can happen will depend on what type of lip filler was used. If you have an HA filler, the surgeon will be able to inject the lips with the enzyme hyaluronidase.
However, if you do not have an HA filler, the filler will not be dissolvable, and you will have to wait for the filler to dissolve naturally.
How long will the fillers last for?
Unfortunately, lip fillers will not last forever. If you are happy with the appearance of the lips with the fillers, you will need to continue having further injections to maintain the look. How long the filler will last will depend on your metabolism – the filler will not last as long if you have a fast metabolism. On average, the filler can last around four to six months. Make sure you consider the ongoing cost of the fillers.
What is the recovery period like?
As this is a non-surgical procedure, there is minimal downtime. You will be able to resume your usual daily routine straight away. However, you may wish to consider that you could potentially have swelling and even bruising following the procedure. It is important to consider if you want to return to work right away or are attending any big events straight after having the fillers.
It is recommended that you avoid exercising on the day you get lip fillers, as this will cause extra blood flow to the face.
Research the practitioner you’re going to
You don’t want to end up having botched lip fillers and having overfilled, lumpy lips. You can avoid this by doing research into the practitioner you’re planning on going to. Make sure the practitioner is not only qualified but also experienced. Some people may have medical qualifications, but do not frequently administer lip fillers.
You don’t have to overfill your lips
While the fashion may be to have overfilled lips, keep in mind this is not what you have to do. Fortunately, with lip fillers, you are completely in control of how much filler is injected. You may wish to have a smaller amount injected at first and then have more injected at a later date if you still wish your lips to be bigger.
Mention any health conditions and medications
Although lip fillers are a non-surgical procedure, you will still need to discuss your medical history with your surgeon. This includes letting the surgeon know about any health conditions you currently have, as well as disclosing any medications or health supplements you are currently taking. Your conditions or medications may interfere with the lip fillers. For example, lip fillers could cause cold sores to return or have negative impacts on those who have disorders such as lupus or diabetes. Medications you are taking may cause the treatment area to bruise. Make sure you disclose your medical history to ensure you achieve the best results.
