Is it even possible to breastfeed with implants?
An inevitable and biggest concern for mothers and mothers-to-be considering breast enlargement, our experts answer the most commonly asked questions about breastfeeding with implants this National Breastfeeding Week.
The answer is yes!
Breastfeeding with implants is very much possible, and although some variables do play a part, most breast implants cannot stop the nurturing female organ from playing its part. If you are considering breast implants, then here are a few questions you would want to ask your surgeon during your consultation.
What type of implants should I be going for?
Breastfeeding with both silicone and saline breast implants is possible. Saline implants especially carry no chemical risks, even if they were to mix with milk. Silicone implants, however, face a lot of controversy regarding their safety. Some experts like to point out the fact that cow’s milk can contain more silicone compared to implants so silicone implants can be considered safe for a baby. Some experts have also found that babies breastfed from silicone breast implants might be adversely affected. This risk can be, however, reduced or completely avoided by deciding the safest placement of the implants, which should be your next question.
Where should my breast implants be placed?
Breastfeeding with implants under the chest muscles can prevent your milk ducts and nerves from getting damaged and the silicone from going into your breast milk. This technique is potentially a safe option for both you and your baby. This is why most mothers choose to go for the placement of implants under the muscles.
Will my baby get enough breast milk?
If the implant placement is under the muscles, then you do not need to worry about your baby not getting enough milk. However, if the incision for your breast implants is made on your areola, there is a chance that your milk ducts and nerves have been damaged. This will mean that you will not produce enough milk. However, ducts and nerves are known to regenerate over time. You want to see 6 to 8 wet diapers each day to know that your baby is getting enough milk.
Can I increase my milk supply?
If you experience problems while breastfeeding with implants, you could try using a breast pump to stimulate more production of milk. Breast massages are also very helpful in increasing your milk supply.
