Cosmetic surgery is often associated with women, with surgeries such as breast augmentation and a tummy tuck being popular, particularly after pregnancy. However, cosmetic surgery isn’t just limited to women. In fact, there are many procedures that are suitable and popular with men.
So what are the cosmetic and plastic procedures for men?
Liposculpture
Liposculpture is an advanced form of liposuction but is slightly different to conventional liposuction. While liposuction involves the removal of fat, liposculpture focuses on sculpting and reshaping the problem areas. For men, popular areas for liposculpture include the flanks and abdomen.
Liposculpture is completed under a local anaesthetic while the patient is still awake. The treated area will be injected with an anaesthetic solution, which helps to minimise any swelling and bleeding.
Male breast reduction
‘Man boobs’ are otherwise known as gynecomastia. Generally, gynecomastia will develop in infantry, and tends to disappear after puberty. However, sometimes it does not go away or is brought on by excess weight gain. This condition is often considered embarrassing for men. Fortunately, this can be effectively treated with liposuction or excision.
Surgical treatments for gynecomastia
Liposuction:
- Suitable if you have moderate enlargement of your breasts without significant excess chest skin
- Can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic
- Removes the fatty component from the breast tissue
- New liposuction techniques may be more effective, using infrasonic energy to liquefy fat before it is removed
- Liposuction will not remove the breast gland tissue as this is not composed of fatty tissue
Excision:
- Suitable for more severe gynecomastia
- May result in a flatter chest
- Can be combined with liposuction
- A cut is usually located around the areola (the area around the nipple) to access the breast tissue
Facial injectables
Men are often prone to developing frown lines around the upper face and brow area due to stress. The treatment involves injecting anti-wrinkle injections into the dominant muscles that help form expressions and relaxing them. It’s a muscle relaxant, helping to remove wrinkles, sad or tired eyes and angry facial expressions. This helps create a more youthful, refreshed look. Wrinkle-relaxing injections work as a neuromodulator, which blocks the normal flow of neurotransmission. Once injected, it prevents the muscles from contracting, smoothing out the facial lines and wrinkles.
With some patients, the use of anti-wrinkle injections to smooth out wrinkles is not enough. It needs to be combined with a soft tissue dermal filler like Restylane or Juvederm to produce the desired results. These dermal fillers are used to fill in the gaps, grooves and wrinkles. By injecting dermal fillers into the problem areas, facial features are rejuvenated, creating a younger, fresher appearance.
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) treatment
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder. Centre for Surgery offers two highly effective options:
- Anti-wrinkle injections are a temporary treatment for armpits, hands, feet, and face.
- Suction-curettage as a treatment for armpits.
While sweating is a normal physiological function of the body, some people naturally sweat more or less than others. Those individuals who sweat excessively find it can cause problems and embarrassment with school, work and social situations.
Hyperhidrosis affects men of all ages. Hyperhidrosis may be localised or generalised. Body parts such as armpits, hands, feet and groin tend to perspire more due to the high concentration of sweat glands in these areas.
Hyperhidrosis can be effectively controlled or treated with anti-wrinkle injections as a temporary treatment required one or twice a year or with liposuction.
Injections can help to stop sweating in the armpits, as well as the soles of the feet and palms of the hand. Injections work by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves, which stimulates the sweat glands. Once these signals have been blocked, sweating in the injected areas will stop. Sweating will still occur in the areas which haven’t been injected.
Liposuction involves using a small probe which transmits vibration and breaks down the sweat gland tissues. The fat is liquefied, and small tubes are inserted to remove the liquid fatty glands. This will work to reduce sweating.
Male pectoral implants
Sometimes, exercise helps to develop and enlarge the pectoral muscles. However, in some cases exercise alone does not achieve the desired results. Pectoral implants are able to provide a suitable solution.
The procedure for pectoral implants is performed under general anaesthetic and generally takes around two hours. An incision is made, and a pocket between the muscle and rib cage is made. The custom silicone implant is then inserted into this pocket, and the incision is stitched up. This will give men a natural look and feel of pectoral muscles.
